He joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2007 after spending time on loan there, then moved to Real Madrid in 2009 for a world-record transfer fee of €100 million (US$133 million). In 2013 he won two consecutive UEFA Champions League titles with Madrid before leaving for a second spell at Tottenham Hotspur in 2015.

Bale has been described as one of the best players in Europe since his debut against Manchester United in September 2007; however he failed to win any major trophies during his first seven seasons with Spurs or Madrid before capturing La Liga titles on both occasions.[1]

Bale began his professional career at Southampton, making his first-team debut in the 2004–05 season as a substitute against Millwall. He made his first start for Southampton in a League Cup match against Coventry City, scoring twice in a 4–1 win. He played three matches that season before joining Tottenham Hotspur on loan for one month where he scored twice against Birmingham City.[2] In March 2005 he returned to Spurs and stayed with them until July 2007 when he joined Real Madrid on an £8 million transfer fee.[3][4]

Bale spent much of his time at Tottenham playing out wide or through the middle but managed to score 22 goals from midfield during his tenure at White Hart Lane.[5] In his final season there (2008–09), Bale was voted third for "Player of the Year" by Spurs fans behind Steve Bruce and Gareth Southgate but won player's player award after helping them to win FA Cup final against Manchester United.[6][7][8]
