Manchester United is the most historic football club in England. Founded in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club, the club was based in Salford before relocating to Manchester in 1902. In 1910, when league football was introduced and increased from three divisions to four, United became one of the founder members of the new First Division.
Since then, the club have won 20 League titles (including five under Alex Ferguson), 12 FA Cups and 12 League Cups. They were also European champions twice: once in 1968 and again in 1968 after winning two successive European Cups (won consecutively) against Benfica (Portugal). The latter remains a record for a British team winning consecutive major international trophies.[citation needed]
